WAAAAY to much, especially for a Katana
7-10k would be more in line.

108 on the ground seems excessive too. 40 hours of flight won’t be enough, it’s generally about 60 average. The 5 hours of sim time is probably a waste.

    Find another FBO or airfield.

You don’t say what part of the country you’re in, but try AirNav.com for other strips.

you should be able to get your private and instrument for that price.

Don’t spend extra money to learn to fly in cool planes. Learn in the cheapest planes you can find, as long as they aren’t skipping on the maintenance. Once you learn how to fly then step up to something better, you’ll save yourself thousands.

I don’t know who is charging that much but whoever it is must be pretty proud. I’ve seen some high priced schools out there, but that is just out of this world. Is that in US dollars?

I say run away from that place as fast as you can, they only want one thing.

It depends on where you are training. Normally you can expect to pay about stg3995 ($7600) for a residential course in Orlando, which is being advertised in UK Mags.

If we’re talking $17K in US Dollars, then yes… It’s about double what others will charge for the same program.
You can buy a self-study ground school course on DVD from King Schools or Sporty’s Pilot Shop for a few hundred bucks, and training aircraft typically rent for around $100 per hour. A qualified, independent CFI (Flight Instructor) may charge $20-25 per hour for dual instruction. Figure 55-65 flight hours to complete a PPL. Total in nowhere $17K. Shop around!

No , way to much ….what is 108 hrs. ground instruction , you can teach your self for the FAA written and you do not require more than 10hrs of ground instruction. A Katana is very small and fuel efficient , and should actually have a lower than normal price as in comparison of other GA aircraft. Also stay away from “package deals” they are backed up with tricks.

As listed above me you can a Private Pilot DVD FAA written Prep , I recommend Sporty’s pilot shop ..the Private series is around $110 , King’s is expensive.

If you are in England, it is a bit high but not too far out of line. If you are in the USA, it is at least double what it should cost, expecially for a Katana. Elsewhere I don’t know, but few places are cheaper than the USA nor more expensive than the UK. I have been an instructor for over 20 years and the average student requires about 60-65 hours of training…about 35 hours dual and 25-30 hours solo. Some do it in the minimum time, but most do not. Flying is a lot more complex now than when the training requirements were originally laid down.

    –In what country?

It can be done for 1/3 that in the US.

  • JDW says:

Just cost me 12K in Canada
